Do you Know We See Only One Side of the Moon at all times? This is because the Moon takes the same amount of time to rotate on its axis as it takes to go around the Earth. The side we see is called the near side. The time people on Earth got to see the dark side of the Moon was when the first astronauts made an orbit around the Moon, and took photographs. The astronauts lost touch with Earth when they were on the dark side, because the moon blocked their radio signals.
We see different parts of the Moon lit up by the Sun, depending upon how much of the Moon that is lit up is facing towards us or facing away from us. This is repeated in a cycle every 28 days.
