Difference Between Plants and Animals

We know that the clear difference between plants and animals is the way they obtain food that is mood of nutrition - Autotrophic nutrition for plants and heterotrophic nutrition for animals.

Animals move from place to place as they have to go in search of food. So animal have a well-developed organs of locomotion while plants remain in a place, fixed in one position since they can obtain th necessary inorganic materials for photosynthesis from the soil and have organs of locomotion.

Animals have a well-developed sense organs which help them to escape other higher animals that want them as food but in plants, responding to external stimuli is very slow.

Animals are very active and as such, alot of unwanted substances are produced. Again the heterotrophic mode of feeding in animals make them to produce harmful wastes. But in plants, they produce very little waste products since they are stationary and their mode of feeding is autotrophic. The plants waste product are not usually removed but are stored in certain cells as harmless substances.

Plants have a spreading or branching body form with no definitr symmetry, and a large external body surface whic enables them to trap sunlight and absorbe the inorganic substances they need for photosynthesis. But animals have compact bodies which enable them to move about quickly.

Most plants show unlimited growth. They keep producing new shoots. I.e branches, leaves and flowers. Throughout their lifetime. Animals show limited growth. They have a fixed number of organs such as eyes, ears and limbes.

Growth mainly occurs at the tips of the roots and stems of plants. In animals, growth occurs equally in all prats of the body.

Plants are composed of cells that are enclosed in rigid cell walls made of cellulose, a substance found only in plants. In many plants, the cell walls usually become strengthened by the deposition of substances like lignin. The rigid cell wall give plants mechanical support. Animals are made up of cells that do not have cell walls. Hence, some animals have hard body covering (exoskeletons) which give body mechanical support; others have rigid frameworks (endoskeletons) inside their bodies.

Plants store excess food in their body mainly as starch and oil. In animal, however, excess food is stored mainly as glycogen (commonly known as animal starch) and fat.

Plants and animals respire continously. Although, they take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. An actively photosynthesizing plant, however, take in carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen. This is because the photosynthetic rate is much faster than the respiratory rate.
