Area of the shape is 24cm²

First of all, reproduce to form a complete rectangle like in the above photo

Area of a Rectangle = Length x Breath
Where, Length = 8cm and the Breath = (4+2+2) = 8cm

∴ 8cm x 8cm =64cm²


Area of unshaded parts = 3 x 4 
                                   = 12²


Note that the unshaded part here are two
                                   = 12² x 2
                                   =24²


Area of unshaded part = 2 x 1 
                                  = 2²
 
Again, note that the unshaded part are two
                                   = 2² x 2
                                   = 4²


Now, total area of the unshaded part 
                                   = 24 + 4
                                   = 28²


∴ Area of the shaded part = Area of the shape - Area of the unshaded part
                                    =64² - 28²
                                    = 36²  Answer
