The major characteristics of musical sounds are
i. Pitch
ii. loudness and
iii. Quality.

Pitch of sound is determined by the frequency of vibration of the source.

Loudness is determined by the amplitude of the wave.
The presence and combination of higher harmonics (overtones) is responsible for the quality of the sound produced.
When an object is hit or plucked, it vibrates with its natural frequency. Every object has a natural frequency of its own.
Under certain circumstances, a periodic force may be imposed on an object so that the object vibrates with the imposed frequency. If the natural frequency of the object is different from the frequency of the imposed force, the vibration of the object is called forced vibrations. On the other hand, if the frequency of the imposed force is the same as the natural frequency of the object, the object is said to resonate with the frequency of the imposed force.
