In the northern hemisphere the longest day falls during the summer, on 21 June, when the northern half of the Earth is tipped towards the Sun. this is known as the summer solstice. In the extreme north the Sun does nit set at all during this period. During the winter solstice (22 Decmeber), the northern part of the Earth is tipped away from the Sun, resulting in the longest night of the year. On 23 September and 21 March the Earth is positioned insuch a way that the length of day and night is equal (12 hours each). These days are know as the autummal and spring equinoxes respectively.
